In 1939, Joe Albertson, a former Safeway district manager, took $5,000 he saved and $7,500 he borrowed from his wife’s Aunt Bertie, and partnered with L.S. Skaggs to open his first Albertsons store on 16th and State Streets in Boise, Idaho. About SoCal Surf Shop SoCal Surf Shop Hi Everyone! Welcome to SoCal Surf Shop! We are very proud to open our new site to all our family and friends! Welcome to our new Southern California Lifestyle Surf Shop. SoCal started way back in the 1960's in Santa Monica when Paul's father shaped surfboards in their 600 sq. ft. shop on the boardwalk. Back then it was known by the name of SoCal Surf Club, a place to drink beers and "talk story" about surf trips and the goings on of the day. There was not a lot of accessories at the time so he would just sell the basics, custom made surfboards and hand made leather sandals. His Mom and Dad taught Paul how to surf at the age of 3, his parents would even tandem surf together in Santa Monica, Malibu and all around So. Cal. Fast forward 7 years, the Durant family had moved to Silver Strand Beach. Paul would hang out at the only Surf shop in town called the Sport Port, this is where at the age of 10, he made friends with the owner that taught him how to shape Surfboards and build Skateboards. Paul continued his love of Surfing and Skateboarding throughout the 70's, then in the 80's, he discovered another new love, Snowboarding. He was one of the original professional riders on the Sims Snowboard team. Eventually he earned the nickname of Cochise, but that was not until his mid twenties. The nickname Cochise was giving to him due to his Native American heritage and his legendary long black hair. He soon became involved in product development for Sims snowboards and later on he was the product development manager for Vans where he developed the thermo moldable boot liner that is considered the standard for snowboard boots today. Paul Durant carried the SoCal tradition in his father's footsteps in 1999 Dana Point where I met him one fateful day. The SoCal shop carried Surf, Skate, & Snowboards, but what I noticed the most was the warmest and kindest man I had ever met in my life - my Husband, Paul. Sadly, SoCal had to close the doors on their brick and mortar in Dana Point late 2008 and had to rely on the virtual platform know as the internet, but the heart of SoCal stayed steadfast. He and his two girls, Taylor and Eli, are my family. We all Skate, Surf, and Snowboard together and we returned to our roots by opening our new brick and mortar store in Talega of San Clemente! Thank you for all your support and kindness these past few years when we at SoCal needed it most. We updated our website to this new site with all types of new products and new companies for the world to see. My name is Kiza, and I am the owner of ABC Learning Childcare & Preschool located in Murrieta, CA. (formally known as Maria's ABC Learning Childcare & Preschool). My mom, Maria, originally founded Maria's ABC Learning Childcare & Preschool over 25 years ago. I would like to share with you, my mother's story, and why I chose to continue on with her legacy. About 31 years ago my parents welcomed a little girl into this world. (me)! Prior to opening her home up to take care of children, my mom worked as a flight attendant for Alaska/Horizon Airlines. It wasn't long before my mom would have to return back to work. Both of my parents had crazy schedules, so it was extremely difficult for them to find a daycare that would be able fit their needs. Finally, after endless hours of searching, they found someone. The person they hired was licensed, qualified in both CPR & First Aid, and seemed to be very loving and trustworthy. Shortly after my parents returned to work full time, they started noticing that I was losing weight, and acting lethargic. They took me to the Pediatrician frequently, and although he wasn't overly concerned, my parents were. My parents asked the daycare provider if I was eating, drinking and acting normal. The daycare provider claimed that everything was normal, and that there was nothing to worry about. Shortly after, I ended up being hospitalized for being dehydrated, malnourished and anemic. When my parents confronted the daycare provider, the excuse given was that they "forgot" to tell my parents that I wasn't eating at all! The daycare provider's horrific response was, "if your daughter didn't like what was being fed to her, then we simply would not bother feeding her". My parents were devastated, angry and felt horrible for leaving me with someone they thought they could trust. The doctor advised my parents I would have to stay in the hospital for awhile, but when released, the doctor advised my mom to stay home with me until I fully recovered... Frightened... my mom didn't want to leave me in anyone else's care again, so she came up with the idea of opening up her own in-home daycare. She never wanted any child or their parents to experience what she or I went though. That is when she made a vow to open a daycare that would nurture, love and cherish all the children that came in and out of her home. I looked at my mom as an angel. Even the daycare parents would call her their angel! When I was younger, I looked forward to helping my mom with the daycare children. I would even try to skip school so I could help out (shhh...)! I watched in amazement, the love that would pour out of my mom. I couldn't wait to grow up and be just like her! I truly admire and respect my mom with all of my heart. She loved and cared for so many children through the years. About 14 years ago, my mom moved and told me it was my turn to take over and continue the daycare she started. Although I was sad that my mom moved, I was excited at the same time, to have the opportunity to carry on my mom's legacy. I love and cherish every single child that walks through my door and have the same passion for ensuring the highest level of care is given to each child. Welcome Our story begins when founder, Jim Carter, was an eight-year old growing up in Ohio. He would gather seeds from the maple tree outside his home and plant them in his relatives' yards. This was an early indication that Jim loved digging in the earth and watching things grow. In 1981, Jim's father introduced him to a pristine region in Southern California with views for miles of the valley below. Perhaps he reminded Jim of his love for growing things as he encouraged him to purchase 400 acres here, which would later become our award-winning vineyards in the Southern California Temecula Valley. Complete with villas, a restaurant and a spa situated in the middle of 63 acres, his story continues to grow, much like the vines he first planted. As Jim tells it, "I wanted to share the complete wine country experience. Guests not only enjoy the finest wines paired with the finest foods, but they stay in a private villa right in the middle of a vineyard. We are Temecula Valley's only full-service winery-resort that gives them a glimpse of our lifestyle in one of the most beautiful places in Southern California."
