In the 80’s I attended a night time dance class I learned the basic steps of line dancing, when I moved to the Inland Empire not knowing i was going to teach this wonderful activity. I started to gain my experience when I decided to go to a class in Moreno Valley, Ca. By that time, all my Children were grown. I wanted to have and learn something that would allow me to express myself. Before I Knew it, I was having the time of my life learning and being a Teacher to others. I have been given the chance to meet with some wonderfull friends and have connections with other line dance teachers. I would like to give thanks to Ira Yoder for teaching me how to become a teacher and Patty Thompson taught me how to combine steps to new songs and Ruth Deming guided me to become a member of the American Callers. The pickleball courts at St. Michael’s by-the-Sea were born out of community, and exist to serve the community! St. Michael’s was first introduced to this budding sport through neighbors at Carlsbad by the Sea (CBTS). In the fall of 2013 residents of CBTS were in search of a place to play their beloved sport. The two communities partnered to resurface and paint two pickleball courts in St. Michael’s north parking lot. Residents played regularly, and parishioners and clergy began to take notice! As St. Michael’s began to imagine professional courts in its vacant parcel, leadership learned (through another church partnership) of a grant opportunity through the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation. In the spring of 2015, the Foundation awarded St. Michael’s $23,400 for the establishment of two professional pickleball courts! In an effort to make the courts as accessible as possible, the St. Michael’s Pickleball Association was formed. Comprised of parishioners, residents of CBTS, and local pickleball enthusiasts from around North County, the mission of the Association is: To provide an opportunity for healthy, wholesome fun to people of all ages through the wonderful sport of pickleball! Allan Cantor opened the first Cantor’s Driving School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1976. This father of four was a History Teacher and Disciplinarian at Overbrook High School in West Philadelphia. He began teaching students how to drive part-time and on the weekends. Soon, he had taught nearly every teen in the area how to drive. Allan was the best driving instructor around. He was known for his jovial personality and relatability with his students. A stop off to grab a famous Philadelphia cheesesteak during a lesson was not out of the question – and something his students loved about him. Of course it was the 1970s and times were different then, but Cantor’s Driving School has always been about Family, Community, and Safety. As years went by, Cantor’s Driving School grew into the neighboring Philadelphia suburbs. And as his children grew, his youngest son Frank joined the family business. Learning the ins-and-outs of being a great driving instructor from his father, Frank was able to expand Cantor’s Driving School into 5 states – Pennsylvania, Florida, Nevada, Arizona, and California. Today, Frank Cantor owns and operates Cantor’s Driving School with his wife, Cheri, continuing the tradition of a family-owned and operated business.
