Stater Bros. Markets

Our Story Stater Bros. Markets is rooted in the American tradition and proudly celebrates a rich legacy of service to this great nation. Tracing its beginnings back to a small grocery store in Yucaipa, CA, twin brothers and World War II veterans Cleo and Leo Stater purchased the original Stater Bros. Market from W.A. Davis with a $600 down payment. In the midst of the Great Depression, Stater Bros. officially opened for business on August 17, 1936. Headquartered in San Bernardino, CA, Stater Bros. Markets is proudly celebrating 87 years of serving Southern California families. Today, Stater Bros. operates 169 supermarkets in seven counties throughout the area, and has approximately 18,000 employees with annual sales of over $4 billion. Previous Next In 1981, Stater Bros. late Executive Chairman Jack H. Brown, a proud Navy veteran born on Flag Day, took the helm of Stater Bros. Under Brown’s leadership the Company grew to become the largest privately owned Supermarket Chain in Southern California and the largest private employer in both Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Brown passed away in 2016. Prior to his passing, Brown appointed seasoned supermarket industry executive Pete Van Helden to the position of President and CEO. Van Helden also serves as our chairman of the board. Over the years Stater Bros. has become an iconic Southern California mainstay and trusted household name by consistently providing generations of customers with exceptional quality, everyday low prices, friendly service, fresh product offerings and full-service Meat Departments. The Company has been named amongst the Top 20 companies in the United States to offer exceptional job security for its employees according to a recent report published on Forbes.com. The Company has also been rated as the “best place to shop for groceries” among Full Service Supermarket Chains in Southern California according to a Leading National Consumer Magazine. Additionally, the Company remains steadfast in its commitment to “not just doing business in the community, but being part of the community.” Since 2008, Stater Bros. has contributed more than $80 million in food and funds to countless local organizations that support hunger relief, children’s well-being, education, health, and help for our Nation’s Veterans and active service members. Our founders Cleo & Leo Sometime between 1912 and 1915, Clarence and Mary Stater moved their family from Miller, Missouri to Escondido, California. During the Depression they moved farther north to the Yucaipa Valley, a small rural community situated just south of the city of Redlands, California. The depression had taken a heavy toll on their livelihood. They were struggling and on the verge of losing their small farm. Out of desperation, the family made a decision that would shape their future and have a profound effect on thousands of lives in the years to come. It was mutually agreed that Cleo, one of the twin sons, would sacrifice his last year of high school and look for work to help support the family. Jobs were extremely scarce during the winter of 1931 but Cleo was persistent. He was willing to do anything and applied everywhere. After weeks of disappointment, he walked into a small grocery store on West Yucaipa Blvd. owned by W.A. Davis, and although Cleo had no experience and knew nothing about the grocery business, Mr. Davis agreed to pay him 10¢ an hour to man the cash register, sweep the floor and stock the shelves. Cleo worked hard and as time passed, Mr. Davis taught him how to take inventory, maintain accounting records, cut meat and everything else involved in operating a grocery store. After five years, Cleo, now 24 years old, was making $30 a week and had learned all of the business fundamentals. His loyalty and diligence had made him a valuable employee for Mr. Davis, and the educational sacrifice and the financial contribution that Cleo was able to provide helped his family recover. In 1936 Davis offered Cleo the opportunity to buy the business, which included the store and the inventory, the land, a company truck, a 10-acre apple ranch and the W.A. Davis five-room home on the corner of Yucaipa Ave. and E St., all for the total price of $10,000. Years later, Cleo recalled, “He wanted $600 as a down payment, which was like a fortune back then when a dime would buy two pounds of oleo. Then he wanted the balance in $300 monthly payments.” Cleo went to Leo, his twin brother, to discuss ways to obtain the financing. The twins sold their Chevrolets to raise the $600 down payment because, they said, “Owing that much money, we were not going anywhere anyway.” However, they were still short $300 for the first monthly installment. After exhausting all other options and about to give up, Cleo decided to take a chance and approach M.D. Holsinger, the richest man in the valley, who owned the town lumber company. Cleo recalled, “He just looked at me and said, ‘If Davis is crazy enough to sell you his store for that small price, then I guess I’m crazy enough to loan you the money.'” So the first 1,225 sq. ft. Stater Bros. Market, located on West Yucaipa Blvd. opened for business on Monday, August 17, 1936. [read more]

1967 - Waremart Foods Back in 1967, two Boise area businessmen, Ralph Ward and Bud Williams - founded a discount store in Boise, Idaho under the name of Waremart. It was a no-frills, warehouse-style grocery store focusing on low prices. The 70s As time passed, Mr. Ward purchased Mr. Williams' stake in the company and over time, Waremart grew into a small chain of grocery stores, mainly based in the Pacific Northwest. In the 1970s, WAREMART EVOLVED INTO A SUPERMARKET that became regionally famous for low prices, flat-carts and grease pencils that customers had to use to write the price on each item (two of which are gone now, but not the low prices). The Purchase of 1985 In the 1980's after the passing of Waremart's founder, there was uncertainty throughout the company and its future unknown. The employees loved the company, they loved their customers and did not want to see their stores go away. But what could they do? They were not rich investors or wealthy business owners. They were every day, hard working people that loved their place of work and loved the communities they called home. For the employees of Waremart, there was only one option - join together and take ownership of their stores. In 1985 under the guidance of then company president Bill Long, the hard working men and women of Waremart established WinCo Foods' Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), and bought a controlling stake in the company from the Ward family. And so, with 17 stores owned and cared for by these hard working individuals, an employee-owned company was born. 1998 - Woodburn DC In 1998, WinCo Foods opened a new 900,000 sq ft grocery and perishable distribution center in Woodburn, Oregon. At that point, it serviced all of the stores the company owned. By having its own distribution center, WinCo Foods was able to better manage costs and product prices, along with creating hundreds of jobs in Woodburn, OR. This distribution center was a huge step in the growth that would soon take place. WINCO TRIVIA: 1 The Woodburn DC has since experienced expansion, currently sitting at over 1,000,000 sq ft. The Woodburn DC currently services WinCo stores in Oregon and Western Washington state with daily deliveries. 2 The Woodburn, DC was preceded by a warehouse in Salem, OR. 1999 - Name Change In 1999, it was time for a change and a new name. As an employee-owned company, it made sense that the company's new name came from its employees. After a company-wide contest and vote, the new name was decided - WinCo Foods. Under its new name, WinCo Foods would continue on its path to success. WINCO TRIVIA: 1 WinCo Foods still operates three employee-owned stores under the Waremart name; one in Independence, Oregon, the second one in Ontario, Oregon and third in Keizer, Oregon. 2 Prior to the name change, several stores operated under the Cub Foods® name, as part of a franchise agreement. 3 The name WinCo is a combination of the words Winning and Company Read more about our name change The 2000s - Decade of Expansion WinCo Foods would go on to open three more distribution centers and one non-food warehouse that would allow the company to focus on expansion. In 2004 the opening of a DC in Modesto, CA allowed for expansion that focused on California. in 2009, the opening of a new DC in Boise, ID allowed WinCo Foods to expand into Utah. This success would be carried over into the next decade. In 2014 WinCo Foods was able to better serve stores located in Southern California, as well as focus on its Arizona and Las Vegas expansion, by opening a distribution center located in Phoenix, AZ. WINCO TRIVIA: 1 As of the time of its completion in 2009, WinCo's Distribution Center in Boise, ID was the largest free-standing building in Idaho. 2 Do you love knowing that WinCo Foods rarely has empty shelves or is out of something? Our distribution centers and trucking fleet are to thank, making deliveries to every store at least once a day. 3 Flying in to Boise, ID? Look down as your plane makes its descent, you might see the WinCo Foods logo on top of its distribution center, large enough to fit several cars in it. 2014 - The Lone Star State By the time 2014 rolled around, WinCo Foods had already expanded into a new state twice since the purchase of 1985 (Utah in 2009 and Arizona in 2012). 2014 would mark another first, as WinCo Foods began to lay its foundation in Texas, around the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. How would Texas welcome an employee-owned store? Would customers accept bagging their own purchase, knowing that doing so helped keep prices low? Would buying from bulk bins and being able to purchase as little or as much as one needed be accepted? These and other questions were answered with a resounding positive reception, as WinCo Foods opened four new employee-owned stores in Texas, in one single year. The answer was simple, Texas loves WinCo Foods and WinCo Foods loves Texas. 2016 – The New Texas DC and OK Expansion With the beginning of 2016, WinCo Foods prepared a major move in the Texas market, as well as for its overall growth and sustainability plan by opening a state-of-the-art, 800,000 square foot distribution center in Denton, TX – the single largest economic development in the history of Denton. The move allowed WinCo Foods to fully supply all of its current and upcoming Texas stores, but also to supply all future expansion in the region. This includes the late-May 2017 opening of the company’s first store in the state of Oklahoma, in the city of Moore. This careful expansion of both the company and its distribution operations has so far resulted in superb results. The response to WinCo Foods in the Moore, OK area has led to huge crowds in the aisles and thousands of satisfied customers thrilled to get to experience The Supermarket Low Price 2017 - Certified Employee-Owned Certified Employee-OwnedAs one of the largest ESOP companies in the nation, WinCo Foods believes wholeheartedly in the benefits of employee ownership. In August of 2017, WinCo Foods continued to support the values of employee ownership, by becoming a founding member of Certified Employee-Owned, an alliance of companies dedicated to building a voice for employee ownership. Certified Employee-Owned works to unite employee-owned companies with a common brand that will raise national awareness of employee ownership and provide a source of differentiation for its members. 2019 – WinCo Enters Montana In early March of 2019, WinCo Foods made the move into Montana, opening stores concurrently in Billings and Helena – our 125th and 126th stores, respectively –bringing our signature low prices and wide open stores to the area. The impact was immediate as shoppers poured into both locations from all over the state to take advantage of the everyday bargains. WinCo is currently planning its further expansion into the state.
