Allan Cantor opened the first Cantor’s Driving School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1976. This father of four was a History Teacher and Disciplinarian at Overbrook High School in West Philadelphia. He began teaching students how to drive part-time and on the weekends. Soon, he had taught nearly every teen in the area how to drive. Allan was the best driving instructor around. He was known for his jovial personality and relatability with his students. A stop off to grab a famous Philadelphia cheesesteak during a lesson was not out of the question – and something his students loved about him. Of course it was the 1970s and times were different then, but Cantor’s Driving School has always been about Family, Community, and Safety. As years went by, Cantor’s Driving School grew into the neighboring Philadelphia suburbs. And as his children grew, his youngest son Frank joined the family business. Learning the ins-and-outs of being a great driving instructor from his father, Frank was able to expand Cantor’s Driving School into 5 states – Pennsylvania, Florida, Nevada, Arizona, and California. Today, Frank Cantor owns and operates Cantor’s Driving School with his wife, Cheri, continuing the tradition of a family-owned and operated business. In 1939, Joe Albertson, a former Safeway district manager, took $5,000 he saved and $7,500 he borrowed from his wife’s Aunt Bertie, and partnered with L.S. Skaggs to open his first Albertsons store on 16th and State Streets in Boise, Idaho. Joe knew the keys of running a really great store, and it was all about working hard for the customers: give them the products they want, at a fair price, with lots of tender, loving care. Joe was innovative, too. He had one of the first in-store magazine racks in the country along with a scratch bakery and fresh ice cream made in-store. He worked hard, seven days a week, on his vision to build his company, and through his inspiring work ethic and tireless determination to run the best store, the first store thrived. Just two years later, he had opened two other stores in neighboring communities and grew the fledgling company’s sales to over $1 million by the end of 1941.
