Our Story We are a mall-based specialty retailer of action sports related apparel, footwear, equipment and accessories operating under the Zumiez brand name. We operate stores primarily located in shopping malls, and have a presence in the United States, Canada, and Europe. We were founded in 1978, originally under the name “Above the Belt” by Thomas D. Campion, our Chairman. Our current CEO, Richard M. Brooks joined us as Chief Financial Officer in 1993. Our stores cater to young men and women between the ages of 12 and 25 who seek popular brands representing a lifestyle centered on activities that include skateboarding, surfing, snowboarding, BMX and motocross. We support the action sports lifestyle and promote our brand through a multi-faceted marketing approach that is designed to integrate our brand image with our customers' activities and interests. This approach combined with our differentiated merchandising strategy, focus on an omni-channel purchasing process, store design, comprehensive training programs and passionate employees, allows us to provide an experience for our customers that we believe is consistent with their attitudes, fashion tastes and identities and is otherwise unavailable in most malls. Our stores bring the look and feel of an independent specialty shop to the mall by emphasizing the action sports lifestyle through a distinctive store environment and high-energy sales personnel. We seek to staff our stores with store associates who are knowledgeable users of our products, which we believe provides our customers with enhanced customer service and supplements our ability to identify and react quickly to emerging trends and fashions. We design our stores to appeal to teenagers and to serve as a destination for our customers. Most of our stores, which average approximately 2,900 square feet, feature couches and action sports-oriented video game stations that are intended to encourage our customers to shop for longer periods of time and to interact with each other and our store associates. To increase customer traffic, we generally locate our stores near busy areas of the mall such as food courts, movie theaters, music or game stores and other popular teen retailers. Cafe Rio Fresh Modern Mexican
The year was 1997. The place, a little town in southern Utah called St. George. A lovely couple named Steve and Patricia Stanley started a restaurant called Cafe Rio Mexican Grill. Cafe Rio served authentic dishes derived from inspired recipes and traditional cooking of Northern Mexico’s Rio Grande region, Southern Texas, and New Mexico. Central to every bite was the belief that every ingredient must be fresh and made fresh to order. And you know what? People loved it. They couldn’t get enough of it. So much so, that one restaurant became six. In 2004, these six little restaurants caught the attention of a fine gentleman named Bob Nilsen. He purchased Cafe Rio from the Stanleys with the idea of spreading the love of making this fresh Mexican food to everyone in and around Utah and beyond. He made sure to keep the mantra of “fresh food, made fresh” at the very core of the brand. No freezers. No microwaves. Nothing premade. Mr. Nilsen has since moved on and a new team of quality-obsessed leaders have taken the wheel. To this day, our staff still begins each day, bright and early, hand-squeezing limes, hand-scooping avocados, chopping fresh vegetables, simmering sauces, and preparing the chef-inspired recipes our fans have come to love. St. Michael's Pickleball
The pickleball courts at St. Michael’s by-the-Sea were born out of community, and exist to serve the community! St. Michael’s was first introduced to this budding sport through neighbors at Carlsbad by the Sea (CBTS). In the fall of 2013 residents of CBTS were in search of a place to play their beloved sport. The two communities partnered to resurface and paint two pickleball courts in St. Michael’s north parking lot. Residents played regularly, and parishioners and clergy began to take notice! As St. Michael’s began to imagine professional courts in its vacant parcel, leadership learned (through another church partnership) of a grant opportunity through the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation. In the spring of 2015, the Foundation awarded St. Michael’s $23,400 for the establishment of two professional pickleball courts! In an effort to make the courts as accessible as possible, the St. Michael’s Pickleball Association was formed. Comprised of parishioners, residents of CBTS, and local pickleball enthusiasts from around North County, the mission of the Association is: To provide an opportunity for healthy, wholesome fun to people of all ages through the wonderful sport of pickleball!
