About SoCal Surf Shop SoCal Surf Shop Hi Everyone! Welcome to SoCal Surf Shop! We are very proud to open our new site to all our family and friends! Welcome to our new Southern California Lifestyle Surf Shop. SoCal started way back in the 1960's in Santa Monica when Paul's father shaped surfboards in their 600 sq. ft. shop on the boardwalk. Back then it was known by the name of SoCal Surf Club, a place to drink beers and "talk story" about surf trips and the goings on of the day. There was not a lot of accessories at the time so he would just sell the basics, custom made surfboards and hand made leather sandals. His Mom and Dad taught Paul how to surf at the age of 3, his parents would even tandem surf together in Santa Monica, Malibu and all around So. Cal. Fast forward 7 years, the Durant family had moved to Silver Strand Beach. Paul would hang out at the only Surf shop in town called the Sport Port, this is where at the age of 10, he made friends with the owner that taught him how to shape Surfboards and build Skateboards. Paul continued his love of Surfing and Skateboarding throughout the 70's, then in the 80's, he discovered another new love, Snowboarding. He was one of the original professional riders on the Sims Snowboard team. Eventually he earned the nickname of Cochise, but that was not until his mid twenties. The nickname Cochise was giving to him due to his Native American heritage and his legendary long black hair. He soon became involved in product development for Sims snowboards and later on he was the product development manager for Vans where he developed the thermo moldable boot liner that is considered the standard for snowboard boots today. Paul Durant carried the SoCal tradition in his father's footsteps in 1999 Dana Point where I met him one fateful day. The SoCal shop carried Surf, Skate, & Snowboards, but what I noticed the most was the warmest and kindest man I had ever met in my life - my Husband, Paul. Sadly, SoCal had to close the doors on their brick and mortar in Dana Point late 2008 and had to rely on the virtual platform know as the internet, but the heart of SoCal stayed steadfast. He and his two girls, Taylor and Eli, are my family. We all Skate, Surf, and Snowboard together and we returned to our roots by opening our new brick and mortar store in Talega of San Clemente! Thank you for all your support and kindness these past few years when we at SoCal needed it most. We updated our website to this new site with all types of new products and new companies for the world to see. Welcome Our story begins when founder, Jim Carter, was an eight-year old growing up in Ohio. He would gather seeds from the maple tree outside his home and plant them in his relatives' yards. This was an early indication that Jim loved digging in the earth and watching things grow. In 1981, Jim's father introduced him to a pristine region in Southern California with views for miles of the valley below. Perhaps he reminded Jim of his love for growing things as he encouraged him to purchase 400 acres here, which would later become our award-winning vineyards in the Southern California Temecula Valley. In the mid 1990's Jim was at the movies, watching "A Walk in the Clouds." The classic vineyards that set the scene reminded Jim of his Southern California land. And the story of our Temecula winery resort and spa truly began. Jim analyzed the water, soil and climate. Finding the conditions ideal, he started digging in the earth once more. He planted and nurtured the finest grapes with his own hands and the help of a hard-working team. Expert winemakers joined the team to create the wines that would establish the Temecula winery's reputation. Becoming a vintner inspired another chapter in Jim's story: building South Coast Winery Resort & Spa. Complete with villas, a restaurant and a spa situated in the middle of 63 acres, his story continues to grow, much like the vines he first planted. HOW I GOT STARTED IN THE FLORAL INDUSTRY Lucky for me, I grew up with a Grandmother that owned one of the oldest & well known Flower shops in the South Bay Area. She also believed firmly in child labor LOL. Needless to say I was blessed at a very early age with a life long creative gift & priceless valuable knowledge in the flower industry <3. By the age of 8 I had big dreams of being a Lawyer. In my 8 year old mind I imagined myself litigating in court well. As a child I thought I had it all figured out hahaha. Throughout the years I was subjected to child labor, I truly grew to love flowers and being creative (not to mention law school is outrageously expensive!). At the age of 19, I convinced my Grandmother to retire and sell her shop to me ("Carson Florist and Gifts" located in Carson, CA). After several years of owning a retail flower shop, I decided to relocate to the Temecula Valley area. I wanted to start raising a family and let's be honest the cost of living is an huge plus compared to Los Angeles county. As soon as my children hit school age I created Sweet Stems Florist. I wanted to specialize specifically in designing for Events. I prefer and enjoy the Event side of floral design so much more vs the storefront retail side. As an Event Florist I feel like I am able to provide a more personalized experience to each of my clients. The Services that I offer will stand out above others in my industry because I strive for excellent quality and affordability for my clients.
