My name is Kiza, and I am the owner of ABC Learning Childcare & Preschool located in Murrieta, CA. (formally known as Maria's ABC Learning Childcare & Preschool). My mom, Maria, originally founded Maria's ABC Learning Childcare & Preschool over 25 years ago. I would like to share with you, my mother's story, and why I chose to continue on with her legacy. About 31 years ago my parents welcomed a little girl into this world. (me)! Prior to opening her home up to take care of children, my mom worked as a flight attendant for Alaska/Horizon Airlines. It wasn't long before my mom would have to return back to work. Both of my parents had crazy schedules, so it was extremely difficult for them to find a daycare that would be able fit their needs. Finally, after endless hours of searching, they found someone. The person they hired was licensed, qualified in both CPR & First Aid, and seemed to be very loving and trustworthy. Shortly after my parents returned to work full time, they started noticing that I was losing weight, and acting lethargic. They took me to the Pediatrician frequently, and although he wasn't overly concerned, my parents were. My parents asked the daycare provider if I was eating, drinking and acting normal. The daycare provider claimed that everything was normal, and that there was nothing to worry about. Shortly after, I ended up being hospitalized for being dehydrated, malnourished and anemic. When my parents confronted the daycare provider, the excuse given was that they "forgot" to tell my parents that I wasn't eating at all! The daycare provider's horrific response was, "if your daughter didn't like what was being fed to her, then we simply would not bother feeding her". My parents were devastated, angry and felt horrible for leaving me with someone they thought they could trust. The doctor advised my parents I would have to stay in the hospital for awhile, but when released, the doctor advised my mom to stay home with me until I fully recovered... Frightened... my mom didn't want to leave me in anyone else's care again, so she came up with the idea of opening up her own in-home daycare. She never wanted any child or their parents to experience what she or I went though. That is when she made a vow to open a daycare that would nurture, love and cherish all the children that came in and out of her home. I looked at my mom as an angel. Even the daycare parents would call her their angel! When I was younger, I looked forward to helping my mom with the daycare children. I would even try to skip school so I could help out (shhh...)! I watched in amazement, the love that would pour out of my mom. I couldn't wait to grow up and be just like her! I truly admire and respect my mom with all of my heart. She loved and cared for so many children through the years. About 14 years ago, my mom moved and told me it was my turn to take over and continue the daycare she started. Although I was sad that my mom moved, I was excited at the same time, to have the opportunity to carry on my mom's legacy. I love and cherish every single child that walks through my door and have the same passion for ensuring the highest level of care is given to each child. DR. Drew Nystrom, DAOM, L.Ac. CMT I was introduced to massage at a young age but it wasn't until the age of 21 that I enrolled in a year long massage program. I graduated with over 1000 hrs of massage training and with Honors from Maric College (now Kaplan) acquiring a Holistic Health Practitioners Degree. A few years later, after working in the massage field, I knew there was more that I needed to learn. While researching possible schools to further my knowledge I came across Emperors College of Traditional Oriental Medicine. I found my calling. Three years into the four year program, I became severely ill and anything that I ate would go right through me. I lost 30 pounds in a month. A Colonoscopy and Small Intestine Barium Xray revealed major inflammation and ulceration of my Digestive tract. I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease, an Inflammatory Bowel Disease that can involve the entire digestive tract. The doctors prescribed serious medication that stopped the leak (pun intended) and told me to stay away from vegetables and fruits (basically anything healthy). This didn't sit well with me. I understood why those foods would and could make my situation worse at that time but to forgo the life giving nutrients within said foods would surely lead to worsening of this condition. Indebted to all my doctors and western medicine for saving my life; I knew there was a better way to manage and treat my condition in the long run. My time at Emperors allowed me to work with some of the greatest doctors alive today and some that have since passed on from this world. I was also able to work within the LA Community at the schools onsite community clinic and at UCLA, Arthur Ashe Medical Center. Four incredible years later I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Emperors College in 2011 with my Masters in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. In 2016 I finished the Doctoral Program at Emperors College. This program catapulted my understanding of the field of Chinese Medicine as well as western medical sciences. A little background about me, I’m a native of Argentina where I learned watch repair and watch making since an early age shadowing my father, Jacobo, a master watch maker who founded in Buenos Aires the only watch making school of South America at the time. “My father, Jacobo, helped me so much, and taught me everything I know, and everything I have is because of him, and so my wish is to honor his memory by continuing my trade in watch making.” The watch repair business isn’t what it used to be because of disposable watches – “we change a lot more batteries these days” – but there is still a call for my skills as we still do a lot of repair work on old watches with sentimental value for their owners. We keep hundreds of watches that we use only for parts, since many watches we see are not made anymore. When we can’t find an original part or fashion something from a similar part, we can make it from scratch. Working with the tiniest of screws, some smaller than the head of a common ant, We ca repair six to eight watches a day.
